What to Do If Your Partner Is a Man-Child

The words “man” and “child” seem contradictory, but when combined, they describe a person who, despite being an adult, behaves like a child. For instance, Rakib and Afsar got married six months ago. Afsar was charmed by Rakib’s childlike innocence. However, after marriage, she realized that staying up late playing video games and binge-watching Netflix was his daily routine. He is also addicted to junk food and often late for work, leading to job instability.

If your partner exhibits these behaviors, they might have “Man-Child” or “Peter Pan Syndrome,” meaning they act like a child despite being an adult.

Who is a Man-Child?

According to Dr. Mahbub Azad, a specialist at the National Institute of Mental Health, a Man-Child lacks emotional control, can’t handle criticism, avoids responsibility, struggles with financial management, can’t manage stress, and fails to adapt to situations. Simply put, they don’t act their age. This isn’t a clinically certified mental disorder, but it can be frustrating for partners.

Who Tends to Be a Man-Child and Why?

This behavior is more common in men, though not exclusively. One reason is the extra privileges boys often receive growing up. They’re shielded from problems, and parents create a comfort zone for them. These extra advantages during upbringing can lead to immature behavior in adulthood. Additionally, discriminatory behavior towards children, one-sided moral support for boys, and excessive pampering contribute to Peter Pan Syndrome.

How to Identify a Man-Child?

Initially, a partner’s simplicity might seem charming. But how do you know if it’s their simplicity or Man-Child behavior? Dr. Azad explains that Man-Childs often behave immaturely for their age, avoid responsibilities, share personal information with parents or friends, can’t keep secrets, and struggle to handle criticism. Sudden anger, lack of personal hygiene, inability to maintain relationships, and carelessness towards important matters are signs of Peter Pan Syndrome. They may also be addicted to video games, neglect professional responsibilities, and impulsively buy unnecessary things. You’ll notice their friends exhibit similar behavior.

What to Do If Your Partner Is a Man-Child?

Dr. Mahbub Azad suggests showing empathy. Stay patient and try to control the situation calmly. Yelling or getting angry won’t change their behavior and might backfire.

Since they have a childlike mentality, you can be their role model.

Avoid negative behavior to prevent its impact on your relationship. Give them small responsibilities, encourage them after completing tasks, and praise them. Remember, they’re not actually a child, so avoid yelling and explain things logically.

You can seek help from a mental health specialist for couple counseling if needed. If you don’t want your child to become a Man-Child, be conscious of their upbringing from an early age.

If You Are a Man-Child

If you realize you exhibit Man-Child behavior, half the problem is already solved.

Dr. Mahbub Azad suggests finding out how such childlike behavior affects your relationship. Then focus on your behavior and gradually reduce it.

Express yourself. Share your difficulties and desires. Discuss what’s happening inside you with your partner or a trusted person. Ask for their help. Start taking on small challenges and try to solve problems through discussion. If necessary, consult a mental health specialist.
